Using the ABCDE Guide to Spot Possible Melanoma

Graphic chart showing the ABCDE Guide for spotting melanoma in Broward County, FL May is Melanoma Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to take a closer look at your skin and learn how to recognize potential warning signs. While skin cancer is a common type of cancer, many don’t know that melanoma is its most serious form. The good news? When detected early, melanoma is highly treatable. One of the easiest ways to monitor your skin at home is by using the ABCDE guide, a simple tool dermatologists recommend to identify suspicious moles or spots.

At Hollywood Dermatology, our experienced team is dedicated to helping patients detect and treat skin concerns with compassionate, personalized care. With five convenient South Florida locations, we offer a full spectrum of clinical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology services, including advanced skin cancer screenings and the latest treatment options.

What Is the ABCDE Guide?

The ABCDE rule helps you evaluate moles based on five key characteristics:

A – Asymmetry

If you draw a line through the mole and the two halves don’t match, it may be a warning sign. Benign moles are typically symmetrical, while melanomas often are not.

B – Border

Healthy moles usually have smooth, even borders. Watch for irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined edges, as these can indicate a problem.

C – Color

Most non-cancerous moles are a single shade of brown. A mole with multiple colors, such as tan, brown, black, red, white, or blue, should be evaluated by a professional.

D – Diameter

Melanomas are usually bigger than six millimeters (about the size of a pencil eraser). However, they may be smaller when first detected. Any noticeable growth is worth checking.

E – Evolving

This is one of the most important signs. Pay attention to moles, and if any change in size, shape, or color, or if they begin to itch, bleed, or crust, it’s time to see a dermatologist.

Why Early Detection Matters

Melanoma can spread rapidly to other areas of the body if left untreated. Regular self-exams using the ABCDE guide can help you detect problems before they become more serious. It’s also important to schedule routine skin checks with a dermatologist, especially if you have fair skin, have had sunburns, or have a family history of skin cancer.
